Food for Life Nutrition and Cooking Class for Diabetes Prevention and Treatment
A well-planned plant-based diet has many nutritional benefits and has been demonstrated to be as acceptable as the portion-controlled diet for diabetes management. In it's 2017 Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes, the American Diabetes Association maintains that a plant-based diet eating pattern is an effective option for type 2 diabetes management and encourages clinicians to always include education on lifestyle management.
Sponsored by the non-profit PCRM (Physician’s Committee for Responsible Medicine), this Food for Life Diabetes Nutrition and Cooking Demonstration class is a community-based, national program designed by health care professionals to aid family and friends with diabetes to learn about the power of food to improve their health and wellness. Launched in 2009, the Food for Life Diabetes Prevention and Treatment Class is designed to bring a new, research-based, easy-to-follow approach to help family and friends with diabetes in two significant ways:
- avoid preventable complications from the disease
- to reduce the need for medication(s).
Designed by physicians, diabetes educators, registered dietitians, and professional chefs, the goals of this program are to empower family and friends with diabetes with information on how food choices promote, prevent, and treat type 2 diabetes and practical cooking skills for healthy and delicious meal preparation.
Each 3-hour class includes a nutrition video and discussion, followed by a cooking demonstration. People then have the opportunity to take home the recipes so they can recreate them in their own kitchen to complete the hands on experience of the class.
